Bamboo is technically a variety of grass and is often mistakenly thought of as a simple plant. However, this is not the case.

Some varieties of bamboo bloom yearly while others bloom once in a hundred years. Other varieties may grow up to 12 inches a day.

Bamboo does not have to be the boring yellow or brown color either. There are some varieties are blue, black, or burgundy.

Bamboo is a very hearty plant. The best place to buy it is from a nursery when it on sale.

The varieties that you can find in your nursery are usually the kind that will thrive and do very well in your area. However, if there is no bamboo at your local nursery, this does not mean that there is not a selection of varieties that could do well there.

If this happens to you, do some research online for various types of bamboo and where they would grow the best. At the very least, the bamboo plant should like the typical temperatures throughout the day and night of where you live and the composition of the soil.

After you have found the perfect variety of bamboo for your yard, decide where you want to plant it. Remember to look at how large it is supposed to grow.

You do not want to plant is somewhere only to overgrow and kill another bush, block a path, or simply become a humongous monster under a power line. There are a few varieties that grow up to 50 feet tall.

These plants would be less than ideal for indoor planting. However, planting indoors allows the climate to not be such a big concern.

Be sure that you want to put in the maintenance work and time in trimming your bamboo bush before you plant it. There are a few varieties that will spread like crazy and only grow a few inches in height.

Bamboo is a very hardy plant that can survive almost anything. However, if you decide you do not like it a few years down the road when it has developed roots, it will be very difficult to get rid of.

If you are sure of your decision, try to provide the bamboo plants with as much sunlight as possible. Young bamboo plants will need a lot water.

When the bamboo plant begins to turn yellow, it is receiving too much water and beginning to die. Most bamboo plants take very little special care under their ideal conditions.

However, if your bamboo plant looks like it is struggling there are several things you can try. Use the same fertilizer that you would use on grass for your bamboo plant.

Natural fertilizers such as manure, compost, or others varieties are also very good for bamboo. Some bamboo grows very quickly and is not able to fully support itself.

Consider tying it to a stake if this is the case. As it grows to maturity is should be able to support itself and the stake can be removed.

If you are growing your bamboo plant indoors it may reach the capacity of its container. If this is the case, you will need to transfer the bamboo to a new container.

The bamboo may develop a few dry, yellow leaves. When you see these leaves be sure to pull them off as soon as possible.

This is both more healthy and attractive. With the proper taste in selection and care bamboo can be the perfect touch to a living room or yard.
