| Title: | Defensive Driving Part Two |
| Article: | Defensive driving is one of the most important parts of being a safe driver. If you can become a successful defensive driver then you will be able to stay safe on the roads and keep those around you safe as well. Defensive driving is all about obeying the rules of the road, keeping road rage out of your driving habits, and being able to predict or anticipate what other drivers around you are going to do with their cars. Let’s continue with our list of the best defensive driving tips around today. We last left off discussing how important it is to wear your seat belt at all times when driving on the roads. Our next tip is to not drive impaired. Driving impaired includes being under the influence of drugs or alcohol. The drugs can be legal or illegal. If you are taking medicine prescribed by your doctor that specifically says you shouldn’t operate heavy machinery, such as a car, then do not drive while taking that medicine. Don’t drink and drive and don’t drive while under the influence of illegal drugs either. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that close to 18,000 people are killed each year on the roads in alcohol-related accidents. That number accounts for 41 percent of the people killed on United States roads each year. Our next tip is to obey all red lights and stop signs. When approaching an intersection with a yellow light, slow down and come to a stop, do not speed up and try to beat the light. This can cause serious collisions in intersections. Also, come to a complete stop at stop signs, not a rolling stop. After coming to a complete stop at a stop sign, drivers are still required to yield to oncoming traffic. Another important defensive driving tip is to employ a relaxed attitude while driving. Don’t drive angrily or upset because this can affect your ability to drive safely and to make important decisions. When your emotions are running on high you will not be able to single out potential dangers ahead of you and you might not realize that you are breaking the rules of the road as well. Another great tip is to know when to use your lights. If it is raining, snowing, or dark out; put those headlights on. Using headlights makes it easier for other drivers to notice your car in inclement weather or at nighttime. Along with using your lights, drivers should always use their turn signals when changing lanes and making turns. This is a very important defensive driving tip because your turn signals inform other drivers where you are going to steer your car. The final tip of this section is to back off the gas pedal when driving in snow or rain or other inclement weather. Knocking off 5 or 10 MPH from your driving speed in inclement weather can mean the difference between an accident and safely reaching your destination without any problems. The next section of this important defensive driving tip list will include avoiding distractions, taking care of your vehicle, avoiding one car accidents, always obey train signals and get plenty of rest before driving.
