| Title: | Diamond Certification – What it Means to You |
| Article: | With diamonds being such a costly entity, there are many diamond certification companies around. They are independent companies situated world over that evaluate, grade and then certify diamonds based on a set of international standards and parameters. Every certification process has an industry standard and this is provided by the GIA; the Gemological Institute of America. The international parameters set by the GIA are the standard minimum criteria world over. We also have the American Gemological Society which is involved in the grading of the color of diamonds and gemstones during the process of diamond certification. Their color grading standards are considered to be superior to the GIA. We also have the Accurate Gemological Laboratories (AGL) and its European counterpart the European Gemological Laboratories also known as the EGL. The AGL is mainly involved in diamond certification by evaluating the 4 C’s of the diamond and then providing its comprehensive report. The EGL on the other hand follows what the AGL protocol but in addition gives a report about the various proportions of the diamond. This includes the angles of pavilion and the crown, thus making its report all the more comprehensive. The International Gemological Institute (IGI) also shares a diamond certification similar to that of the Europeans. They also speak about the angles and crown of the diamond. However the major advantage is that they are cheaper than the GIA for certification. Their major areas of interest are small and medium sized diamonds. Mention diamonds and Australia can never be far behind, and so is the case in diamond certification. They have the Independent Gemological Laboratory IGL They are said to be highly accurate and specific. Each and every diamond brought to them for certification is cross checked for color, purity and other features with high precision and then the results are cross checked by an independent 3rd party certifier. We also have Hoge Raad voor Diamant or “Diamond High Council” as it is more popularly known. It is a Belgian company which is known world over with high quality diamond certifications. Their certification is based on standard high quality international specifications. It’s the companies policy never to reveal the name of the owner of the diamond, whomever it maybe to the appraiser in order to eliminate the possibility of bias in their reports. We also have the Gubelin Labs situated in Switzerland which was started by the famous Dr. Eduard Gubelin. They are also a very reputed company in the market of diamond certification and they also appraise gemstones. To evaluate colored gemstones we have the American Gemstones Traders Association. They are involved mainly in the certification of colored gemstones and pearls and share a similar profile as that of the diamond certification companies. In addition to this we have many other 3rd party certifiers that certify diamonds. The diamonds used in wedding bands are totally certified and have a diamond certification. This diamond certification is done totally free of cost for the customer.
