| Title: | Getting a Permanent Crown |
| Article: | There are a few dental terms that most people are familiar with and have either heard them or have had personal experience with them. Some of these terms include; crowns, veneers, implant, enamel, root canal, denture, curettage, gingivitis, plague, space maintainer, tartar, radiograph, and several other words that are associated with dentistry. You may or may not have had some of these kinds of procedures done before. One procedure that is more common than you think is getting a crown. When would you get one and how is it done? It is a permanent covering that fits over your original tooth. For example, you may have had an accident in which one of your front teeth was damaged. It could be decaying or cracked. This could have happened to you if you got knocked in the mouth with something heavy and hard and that would have damaged it. When your tooth becomes damaged in some way, then the nerves that supply blood through your gums is hurt. It starts to turn a dark color and can be very noticeable if it is located in the front of your mouth. Some dentists may try to bleach it a few times first. They can drill a hole up inside of the dead tooth and put a bleaching agent up there and then cover it back up. But this does not always work or last for as long. You can try having this done several times to see if it will eventually start to turn it more white but more often than not, it does not work quite as well and you would have to go through this process many times for it to make any kind of a difference. So getting a crown may be the more practical choice for you even though it can be an expensive procedure. It is a dental restoration that completely covers the dead tooth and is made to look and feel like the original. No one will ever notice that it is fake unless you tell them about it. They can be made from several different types of materials. These include; amalgam, composite resin, glass ionomer cement, resin modified glass ionomer cement (otherwise known as RMGIC), compomers, porcelain and gold. You can choose what kind of filling you want the dentist to use and they will help you decide which one to get by giving you all the information on the different types. All of them have pros and cons that go along with them and you should know all of it so that you can make an informed decision. Not only are crowns used to fix dead or cracked teeth, but also to improve the strength and appearance of your mouth. When you go to get one, the dentist will make an impression of the tooth that is to be "replaced" so that they can make it the same size and shape to fit into your mouth correctly. They send that impression over to another doctor who actually makes it and it takes a few days. Once your dentist gets it back, they will shave down the dead or cracked tooth and fit it over the top of it. They glue it so that it is in there nice and tight and then seal it up and send you to the coloring specialist. The coloring specialist will compare the crown with the surrounding teeth and look at the color so that he or she can paint it to match the rest of your mouth. Before you get this done, it is a good idea to get your teeth whitened if you want because the coloring specialist is going to make your crown match the same color as the rest of your teeth. This may take a little while and you may get tired of keeping your mouth open for so long but it will be worth it in the end. After they let the color dry on it, then the process is over. You can go back to treating it normally and no one will ever know that you now have a fake tooth in your mouth.
