| Title: | How To Become An Effective Boss |
| Article: | People management is one of the most difficult aspects of having your own business. Different people have different personalities; they have different sources of motivation, and different strengths and weaknesses. You, as the "boss," need to be able to motivate, influence, and lead them to work towards a common goal, that will not only be beneficial to your business, but to them as well. Motivating Your People : There are two types of motivation: extrinsic and intrinsic. Extrinsic motivation is one that is derived from external factors, such as an increase in pay, rewards, and incentives. Intrinsic motivation is derived from within the person, such as the feeling of satisfaction when a small goal has been achieved. Find out what type of motivation each of your people has and nurture it. Your people like to feel valued and important, and that is why you need to be able to do something for them every now and then that would make them feel that way. For example, taking time to talk to them and asking how they are doing. This would make your people realize that they matter to you and the company. Recognize people for their good work; give quarterly awards and recognition programs. It does not have to be anything fancy. Remember, it is the thought that counts! Influencing Your People : Influence is one of the most powerful attributes a person can have. When you can effectively influence others, you can create change. However, if you do not have that attribute, you can always begin to develop and learn it today. The very first thing you need to remember about being able to influence others is respect. When others respect you, they will look up to you and see you as their role model. And to gain the respect of your people, it is imperative that you live by your principles (it goes without saying that you must have a good set of principles), and that you should "walk your talk," so to speak. This means that if you tell people to work hard, you yourself should be working just as hard or even harder. Influencing people does not mean you bully or coerce them to do want you want because although they may follow out of fear, these are not effective and sustainable strategies. People are far more willing to follow your lead if they believe that it is in their best interest, and that they trust you to help them in making the right choices. Influencing is not about power or authority; it is about the impact you have on others. Leading Your People : Leading people to work towards achieving your business goals can be a challenge but when you are able to motivate and influence them, they would be more than willing to listen and follow your lead. Problem-solving and decision-making are also attributed to effective leadership because in managing your business, many situations will require you to deal with difficult situations and you have to be able to make the right choices. It is also about effective communication; you should be able to communicate your vision to your people and develop good working relationships with them. When you can motivate, influence, and lead your people, then you have become an effective "boss."
