| Title: | Preparing to Navigate the Airport During the Holidays |
| Article: | Flying during the holidays is not only a hassle, but a major headache. Airports are simply cram packed with people trying to reach thousands of different destinations. The key to navigating this mess of people is to remain calm and take one thing at a time. If you have a delay, try to think positively about how at least you did not miss your flight. Then, try to think of something you can do to pass the time that will not add to your stress. Many people run into the problem of missing their flight because they tried to save some money by taking a three or four connection flight. However, the best way to get a good price and fewer connections is simply to leave a few days earlier or later. This will allow you to miss the peak that is really stressful at the beginning of the year. This does not mean it will not be busy, but there will hopefully be fewer deals and the airport will not be quite as packed as before. In general, it is best to not schedule a flight for the Wednesday before Thanksgiving or the Sunday after Thanksgiving. In addition, it is good to get a flight that does not leave on the Saturday before Christmas. Return flights are generally more spread out so you can return home whenever you feel like it. Remember that it is never a good idea to take the lower price for increased connections during the holidays. This will increase your chances of missing your flight and of being delayed several times. With all of the flights full during the holiday season, it can be quite difficult to find another flight that you can join to get to your destination. The earlier you can get your ticket for the better as there will be much fewer and shorter delays earlier in the day rather than later. Even though you should try to avoid as many connections as possible, it is likely that you will have to make at least one. Be wise when you are selecting which connection you are going to make. Do not select a connection that has the second flight leaving a half hour after the first. This is a very risky chance you are taking during the holiday season. With all of the delays and messed up schedules you will have a very good chance of missing your second flight. As mentioned before, it will be really difficult to find another flight that has a seat open for you. In addition, it is also good to keep in mind which airport you are making a connection at. If you have a choice as to whether you connect in Los Angeles or Salt Lake City, choose Los Angeles. Los Angeles will have much better weather and most likely fewer delays. If you are unsure about which airport is better as far a weather conditions go, choose the more southern of the two choices. During the holidays it is also a very good idea to print off your boarding pass before you arrive at the airport. This way you will be able to skip the check-in line. Another extremely stressful part of the airport is security. This is another stress that you can relieve by reading the instructions on how to pack your bags and what you should not pack. For example, you should not pack any liquids that are greater than 3 oz in size. It is a very good idea to create a list of things to pack before you start packing. This will help make sure that you do not forget anything. It is best if you can travel with a carry on instead of large luggage. Large luggage takes more time to check, is a hassle to take through the busy airport, and can be easily lost when there is so much luggage being transported. It much safer and easier if you simply only take enough that you can keep all of your belongings with you. Do not expect the airline to replace your belongings if your luggage gets lost. They may replace part of the cost of the things in your luggage, but you will only receive this after you fill out a variety of forms and you will probably not receive as much as you think you deserve. It is also advisable not to put wrapped gifts into your luggage. In addition, it is a very good idea to wear the appropriate clothing to the airport.
