| Title: | Rhinoplasty: GOR-TEX Implants Are Safe and Effective in Nose Surgery |
| Article: | In a recently release study, researchers found that GORE-TEX implants used in rhinoplasty or nose surgery are just as safe and less expensive than natural tissue grafts. This information comes as no surprise to many rhinoplasty patients and their cosmetic surgeons. The Study The study was conducted by a group of researchers at the University of Toronto and examined over 500 patients during a 17-year period. According to the findings, GOR-TEX implants of thicknesses up to 10 millimeters showed "excellent stability and tissue tolerance" and they "should be strongly considered for major and minor corrections of the nasal wall and bridge in properly selected patients." In fact, only 1.9 percent of all the case studies in the research required later removal of the GORE-TEX implant because of infection, swelling, and displacement of the implant. Rhinoplasty Benefits No matter what type of implant is used, if at all, rhinoplasty can be a great way to boost your self confidence, correct injuries to the nose and associated breathing problems, or just give you the shapely nose you have always wanted. Nose jobs are very safe and very popular with more than half a million procedures occurring in the United States each year. Most people are good candidates for rhinoplasty, as long as they have realistic expectations about the outcome of the surgery and they have reached an age where the nose has basically stopped growing. The Procedure After being given anesthesia, your plastic surgeon will make small incisions on the inside of the nose to get to the underlying bone and cartilage. Then based on the plan and preferences discussed with the surgeon, he or she will reshape the nose by removing bone, adding bridge or tip implants, or removing part of the tip cartilage. Different ethnicities typically request unique changes, so Asian patients usually get bridge implants, while African-descent patients often want smaller tips and nostrils. Caucasians frequently ask for removal of bumps on the bridge or a decrease of the height of the bridge. Recovery After the incisions are sutured, you will go home with a splint covering your nose. This will protect your new shape during the healing process. You may also have to keep gauze or nasal supports up your nostrils for several days for the same purpose. There may be some swelling, bruising, and discoloration of the nose and face during the first several days after the surgery. Any pain can be managed by medications prescribed by your surgeon. All normal physical activities can generally be resumed after a few weeks after your rhinoplasty procedure, although you may be able to return to work after just a few days if you are feeling up to it. Other Helpful Procedures Many cosmetic surgery patients find it easy and appealing to have other procedures performed at the same time as their rhinoplasty or soon after. These often include face-lifts that remove excess facial skin to get a smoother, tighter look. Eye-lifts are also popular as they can help diminish the look of wrinkles around the highlight of the face. Whether you are interested in a face-lift, eye-lift or any number of other cosmetic surgeries, be sure to talk to your doctor about the possibility of combining your procedures into one operation.
