| Title: | Storing Freeze Dried Food |
| Article: | Your emergency supply of food should contain a variety of different types of food that will be able to feed your family for an entire year. Some things like flour, sugar, and wheat need a lot of other ingredients to be able to make a meal though. In an emergency, you may not have the option of being able to take the time or have the space or materials necessary to prepare a meal or cook something from scratch. This is why having canned and freeze-dried foods is so important. Canned food includes things like soup, vegetables, fruit, and any other things that come in a can and can be stored and last potentially for years. All of these things can be eaten without any preparation or added water. Sometimes soup is concentrated, and it is suggested to add a can of water to it, but the water is not necessary to make it edible. Having a large supply of canned food can make surviving an emergency a lot easier since no preparation is required. Canned food is also easy to rotate on an everyday basis when you are not in an emergency. Since we use things that come in a can often in the meals we cook daily, like soup, sauces, fruit, chili, etc., it will be easy to make sure that your food supply is always up to date . Your food storage should also contain dry food. Dried food usually includes things like rice, dehydrated beans, noodles, wheat, flour, and sugar. These are supplies that can be used for many different meals, and typically only need water to help prepare a meal with. Dry food can be packaged in buckets or other air-tight containers and can last over 25 years. There is also something called freeze-dried food. This method can take freshly cooked meals, flash freeze them, and then suck out all of the oxygen and 98% of the moisture from the food. You can freeze dry things like pancakes, eggs, lasagna, chicken and rice, vegetables, fruit, and many other things. All of these can be full meals for your family, and the only preparation necessary is to add water. Freeze-dried food is housed in moisture and oxygen proof containers that protect and preserve the meals inside. You can buy them in bucket if your family is larger, and the buckets will keep the food fresh for up to 25 Years. If you have a smaller family, or you just prefer single portion sized packaging, there are moisture and oxygen proof bags that can preserve the food for 7-10 years. Your dry and canned food supply should be large enough to feed every member of your family for up to a year. If you have the space and are able to build your supply up larger than that then you should. It is better to have too much food than not enough. In addition to having a large supply of food, you should also have a good amount of water. Your water supply is not only for drink and staying hydrated, but it will be used to prepare meals as well. The water should be housed in plastic or glass containers so that it stays clean and drinkable at all times. Like your food supply, your water should be rotated as well. Not that water goes bad, but to keep it fresh you should use it and replace it just like you do your food supply. It should also not be stored next to any gasoline, pesticides, or any other harmful substances. Your supply should contain enough water for each person in your household to have the use of one gallon everyday for at least 10 days. If at all possible, that supply should be increased to a 30-day supply. This means that a family of four should have a minimum of 40 gallons of water stored in their house in case of an emergency.
