| Title: | Storing Your Food Properly |
| Article: | There are many different ways that you should store specific fruits and vegetables. It is very important that you store your food in the correct manner. When you come home from the grocery store with a whole bunch of fresh produce and other food items it may difficult to know where to put some of the items. There are several different options for where you can store your produce. However, if may be difficult to decide which spot is the best. The spots where you can put your fresh produce include outside your refrigerator, inside your refrigerator in the crisper, or inside your refrigerator on the shelf. The list of where you can store your produce outside the refrigerator is endless. Where you decide to store these fruits and vegetables depends on what kind of produce you are dealing with, how ripe it is, how ripe you want it to be, how crisp it is, and so forth. The first thing you should know when you are making this decision is that fruits and vegetables left out at room temperature will slowly loose the vitamins and minerals that they store. Unfortunately, one of the top reasons fruits and vegetables are eaten are because of the presence of vitamins and minerals. In most cases, it is not best to store fruit or vegetables on the counter. However, there are several exceptions. Many tropical fruits will go bad much more quickly when stored in the refrigerator. For example, bananas and pineapples are both types of fruit that should be stored on the counter. Most people come home and automatically throw all of their produce in the crisper drawers. The crisper drawers are those found most commonly in the bottom of the refrigerator. These drawers do not allow the produce to lose moisture nearly as quickly as when the produce is simply placed on the shelf. Due to the fact that the water is lost slower, the produce tends to come out crispier than produce simple set on the shelf. The foods that need a more humid atmosphere should be placed in the crisper. However, this does not mean that you should not properly prep the food before you put it in the crisper. Again, the proper way to prep the food varies depending on the variety of food it is. When you want to store apples for a long period of time, you should put them in a paper bag in the crisper. This will help slow down the ripening process and therefore prevent them from becoming mushy. However, apples do not last longer than three weeks at best. In addition, carrots should be put in a paper bag as well. This will help prevent them from becoming soft and limp as well. However, you should cut off the green top before you store them in order to preserve them as long as possible. Even though carrots seem to last longer, it is best if they are eaten within the first week of purchase. The best vegetable to place on the shelves in the refrigerator is unhusked corn. However, these should be wrapped in a damp cloth. This corn should be used as quickly as possible. Berries should also be stored on the shelf in a paper bag or covered in plastic. You should not remove the stems until you want to eat them. Cucumbers should be stored in the highest place possible to avoid the development of ice crystals around the seeds. If you want to properly store mushrooms, you should wash them off with a damp cloth and place them in a dark paper bag. Tomatoes should never be refrigerated or they will lose all of their flavor and texture. Instead, they should be stored on the counter with the stem down so that it does not pick up direct sunlight. There is a specific way you should store each fruit and vegetable and these can easily be looked up online. There are also many tips for how things should be stored for a much longer period of time. Long term methods of food storage are also critically important. One of the best additions to this storage is freeze dried food. Freeze dried food is very easy to store, to pack, to prepare, to eat, and to get nutritional value from. It comes in a variety of different meals that you can choose from. In the past these meals were quite disgusting, but many improvements have been made that have made it taste and smell good. In addition, the texture has been improved. It is very important that you store your food properly.
